That section of the STS-N or OC-N frame that carries the data payload plus the Path

Tandem Connection-Alarm Indication Signal. Indicates if IEC bits 1110 are being
received from upstream TCM equipment. (Bits 1-4 of the N1 byte are the IEC bits.) This
is an alarm.
