Term Definitions
SM
Section Monitoring
SN Error
Sequence Number error.
SNP Error
Sequence Number Protection error.
SONET
Synchronous Optical Network. A family of fiber-optic transmission rates from 51.84
million bits per second to 13.27 gigabits (thousand million) per second (with time, this
will go higher), which was created to provide the flexibility needed to transport many
digital signals with different capabilities and to provide a design standard for
manufacturers. Also see SONET Versus SDH Terminology.
SPE
See Synchronous_Payload_Envelope.
STM
Synchronous Transport Module. A structure in the SDH transmission hierarchy. STM-1
is SDH's base-level transmission rate equal to 155.52 MBit/s. Higher rates of STM-4,
STM-16, STM-64, and STM-256 are also defined.
STM-0
Synchronous Transport Module level 0. STM-0 is 51.840 million bits per second. Its
electrical equivalent is an STM-0e.
STM-1
Synchronous Transport Module level 1. An SDH channel of 155.52 megabits per
second (Mbps).
STM-4
Synchronous Transport Module level 4. An SDH channel of 622.08 megabits per
second (Mbps).
STM-16
