ICMP
Internet Control Message Protocol. A TCP/IP protocol used to send error and control
messages. The ICMP reports errors that occur during transmission of IP datagram
packets. For example, a router uses ICMP to notify the sender that its destination node
is not available. A ping utility then sends ICMP echo requests to verify the existence of
an IP address.
IGMP
Internet Group Management Protocol. Used by IP hosts to report multicast group
memberships to neighboring multicast routers.
Insert
That process wherein part of the information carried in a transmission system is
modulated (inserted) into a higher speed signal.
IP
Internet Protocol. A DOD standard protocol designed for use in interconnected systems
of packet-switched computer communication networks.
IR
Information Rate. In Y.1564, this is the average bit rate (in bps) of Ethernet service
frames at the measurement point starting with the first MAC address bit and ending with
the last
FCS
bit.
ITU
The International Telecommunication Union (ITU), headquartered in Geneva,
Switzerland, is an international organization within the United Nations System where
governments and the private sector coordinate global telecom networks and services.
ITU-T
The ITU Telecommunication Standardization Sector (ITU-T) is one of the three Sectors
of the International Telecommunication Union. ITU-T's mission is to ensure an efficient
and on-time production of high quality standards (Recommendations) covering all fields
of telecommunications. It was formerly known as the CCITT.
