What are RFC 2544 Tests?
RFC 2544 tests are used as a benchmark test for network devices. They were
developed to test throughput, latency, frame loss and burstability across a range of
packet sizes and bandwidths. RFC 2544 has become the de facto standard for
benchmarking Ethernet networks.
Throughput Testing determines the maximum data rate which can be transported
at each of a series of packet sizes, defined by the standard, i.e. 64, 128, 256,
512, 1024, 1280, 1518 bytes. NOTE: The MPA offers the ability to send non-
standard packet sizes.
Latency Testing measures the time interval required to transport a packet
through the device or network under test and back. Low and consistent latency is
vital for protocols such VoIP and video applications.
Frame Loss Testing determines what percentage of frames can be sent across
the device or network under test at the series of packet sizes as listed above in
Throughput Testing.
Back-to-Back Burst Testing determines the number of frames that can be sent in
a burst with minimum inter-packet gap through the device or network under test
without losing any frames.
The RFC 2544 methodology can be used to assess the parameters of service-level
agreements (SLAs). A carrier can then determine whether an Ethernet circuit complies
with the agreement, based on the test results.
