Pattern Movements Summarized
EXAMPLE OF CORRECT PATTERN
1. Decreasing backlash moves the ring gear closer
to the pinion.
Forward Pattern (convex side of ring gear) moves
lower and towards the toe.
Reverse Pattern (concave side of ring gear)
moves lower and towards the toe.
2. Increasing backlash moves the ring gear away
from the pinion.
Forward Patter n moves slightly higher and
toward heel.
Reverse Pattern moves higher and toward heel.

3. A thicker pinion position shim with the backlash
constant moves the pinion closer to the ring gear.
Forward Pattern moves deeper on the tooth

constant moves the pinion away from the ring
gear.
