14.1 MD110 INTEGRATION OVERVIEW
This chapter explains the MD110 and Octel 200/300 message server configuration requirements and testing
procedures for correct operation of the MD110 adaptive integration.
The integration between the message server and the MD110 is through an RS−232 serial data link. The
connection is made to either an ICU or ICU2 card in the MD110.
.
ICU2 is for MD110 release BC 8.0 or later.
The voice mail integration interface provides the message server with the forwarded extension number and,
for internal calls, the calling party's extension number.

Figure 14-1 shows the message server, the MD110, and the connections between the two. The RS-232C
serial link is required for voice mail integration. This data link provides information to the message server
about calls that have been forwarded to the message server ports. In addition, the message server uses this
link to activate and deactivate message waiting indication.
Message Waiting Indication. Voice mail integration enables the message server to control message
waiting indication (MWI) on the MD110 so that the message server can notify mailbox users that they have
new messages. The message server performs this message waiting indication only for mailboxes with COS
Attribute 9 —
When a new message is received in a mailbox, the message server sends the MD110 a command to activate
the MWI. The MWI is either a visual message waiting indicator, for phones equipped with them, or a
special message waiting dial tone. When the mailbox is accessed, if System Parameter 166 —

turn OFF the MWI, even if the messages are not listened to and erased.
Called Party Identification. When a call comes
MD110 sends a call record over the data link to the message server. The call record provides the message
server with information about the call. The message server answers the call upon receiving the call record.
In most cases, the message server receives the call record before the first ring of the call.
