This chapter discusses the general-purpose timer module (GPTM). Programmable timers can be used to
count or to time external events that drive the timer input pins. This module contains four GPTM blocks.
Each GPTM block provides two 16-bit timers/counters (referred to as Timer A and Timer B) that can be
configured to operate independently as timers or event counters, or concatenated to operate as one 32-bit
timer or one 32-bit real-time clock (RTC). Timers can also be used to trigger µDMA transfers.
The GPT Module is one timing resource available on the microcontrollers; another is the system timer
(SysTick) (see the Cortex-M3 Peripherals chapter) .
