Adding a Roof by Extrusion

You create extruded roofs in relation to a level in a project. You can use a combination of straight lines and
arcs to create the profile of the roof. The height of the roof depends on the location where you sketch the
profile in the elevation view.
When you sketch a roof by extrusion, if you did not specify start and end points, Revit Architecture calculates
a depth for you based on the size of the shape you sketched. For more information about start and end
points for extrusions, see
It is helpful to use reference planes when sketching the profile of an extruded roof. For example, sketch 3
vertical reference planes parallel to one another, and then sketch a horizontal reference plane that intersects
all 3 vertical planes.
The Roof by Extrusion tool lets you create a roof with simple slopes. To create a roof with complex slopes,
you can use massing. See
After you create a roof by extrusion, you can rehost the roof or edit the work plane of the roof. For more
information, see

Sketching a Roof by Extrusion
1 Display an elevation, 3D, or section view.
2 Click Modelling menu
click Roof
3 In the Work Plane dialog, select an option for specifying the work plane. For more information
on work planes, see
4 In the Roof Reference Level and Offset dialog, select the reference level for the roof. The highest
level in the project is selected by default.
5 Specify a value for Offset to raise or lower the roof from the reference level, and click OK.
Revit Architecture enters sketch mode and places a reference plane at the specified offset. Using
the reference plane, you can control the position of the extruded roof in relation to a level.
6 Sketch the profile of the roof. The profile must be an open loop, as shown in the following
image.
7 On the Design Bar, click Finish Sketch.
To see the roof, open a 3D view.
