Liquid cooling system of the LSM

The temperature of the scanners within the LSM scan head is controlled with a liquid cooling system. The
liquid cooling system is also used to dissipate the heat generated by the electronics and the additional
Peltier cooling of the detectors (GaAsP PMT detectors as well one of the side multi-alkali PMTs).
The liquid used for the device can be ordered via ZEISS service.
The system is equipped with an optic and acoustic warning if it does not function as needed. The
following error code, which is also indicated on the unit itself, applies:
Green LED flashing or constant: System is working
Red LED flashing once: Cooling liquid is too warm. Check the temperature in the room. It should be at
22 °C plus/minus 3 °C. If it is more than 30 °C the cooling system cannot work.
Red LED flashing twice: Cooling liquid level is too low. Add liquid to the system.
Red LED flashing three times: Cooling fan is failing. Call service for maintenance.
Red LED flashing four times: No cooling liquid is in the system. Fill the system with liquid.
A corresponding acoustic signal is provided along with the optic signal.
It is recommended to exchange the liquid every two years. Refilling frequency is dependent on room
conditions and adding liquid might be necessary more often.
In case the temperature within the scan head rises above 50 °C at any measuring point, the system will
show and warning and shut itself down. Check the liquid cooling system before restarting the system.

Detector overload protection

Strong light impact over longer time periods can lead to temporary higher dark noise of a PMT (GaAsP or
Multi-alkali) detector or even damage the detector. All detectors of the LSM are protected against high
light doses. If too much light hits the detector the voltage is down-regulated. The time of down-
regulation is dependent on the amount and duration of the light over dose. A down-regulation is
indicated within the image as a white pixel – typically some portion within the scanned line following a
bright object.
In case the light dose is much too high, the detector is shut down automatically and stays shut down. A
warning is indicated in the status bar when this occurs. Reduce laser power and/or gain before starting
the next image scan.
