SROS Command Line Interface Reference Guide
snmp-server engineID local <hex string>
Use the snmp-server engineID local command to change the default and manually set the SNMP v3
engine ID for the local machine. Use the no form of this command to return to the default engine ID.
Syntax Description
<hex string>
Caution
SNMP v3 requires unique engine IDs for all systems in the management domain. Use the
default engine ID when possible to ensure the uniqueness of the numbers. Problems can
occur on a management network that contains duplicate engine IDs.
Default Values
By default, the local snmp-server engine ID is 8000000b03XXXXXXXXXXXX (where the string of Xs
represent the system MAC address).
Usage Examples
The following example changes the default engine ID for the local system to 80 00 00 0b 00 00 00 00 00
00 01 (where 80 00 00 0b represents the IANA ID for HP and 00 00 00 00 00 00 01 arbitrarily represents
the first system on the management domain):

Technology Review
The SNMP v3 engine ID is a unique identifier for a system on a management domain. The default engine
ID contains 11 octets (in hexadecimal notation) that represents certain information about the system. The
default engine ID format is as follows:
Octets 1 to 4
IANA ID for the
product manufacturer
The first 4 octets of the default engine ID for ProCurve Secure Routers is 8000000b. Octets 1 through 4
represent the SNMP private enterprise number (assigned by the IANA) for the product manufacturer. The
leading bit of octet 1 (the most significant bit) will always be a 1 for a default engine ID (making the leading
character in the hex string an 8). ProCurve products use the Hewlett-Packard IANA ID of 11 (which is 0b in
hexadecimal notation). Octet 5 is set to 03 to indicate that the engine ID uses a MAC address as the
unique identifier. The last six octets of the default engine ID for ProCurve Secure Routers contain the MAC

representation (22 characters using 0 through 9 and/or a through f) defining a
system on the management domain. Refer to the Technology Review for more
detailed information on engine ID octet assignments.
