Introduction
A Group is associated with one (and only one) VLAN.
A VLAN can, however, be part of more than one Group, where each group has a different set of IP host
addresses.
A VLAN can be configured for Local ARP Discard as part of a Group and also by itself; since in the latter
case the VLAN is not part of the group, the host IP Addresses are dynamically determined.
A specific interface/VLAN combination can be associated with one (and only one) Group. (An interface
can be a member of several groups, as long as none of the groups share the same VLAN.)
6.12.3.2 Provisioning Dynamic IP Addresses
With DHCP, the exchange of messages between the host and DCHP server(s) will result in an IP address
selected for the host, contained in the DHCPACK message. Therefore, before enabling the Local ARP Discard
feature, the user should enable the MACFF feature on the VLAN/interface combination and choose the mode
LEARNING. After a period (12 to 14 hours), in which addresses have been learned, DHCP leases will renew
for hosts on the interfaces. The user can then change the mode to
The command set is much simpler than for static provisioning:
6.12.3.3 Provisioning Static and Dynamic IP Addresses on the same VLAN
As mentioned in 6.12.3.1, a VLAN can be part of a Group (for static provisioning) as well as not part of any
Group (for dynamic learning of IP Hosts). Referring again to
Group (B) for the Local ARP Discard feature, as well as by itself.
The steps and command set to perform this is essentially a combination of the two scenarios above.
Ensure the VLAN (363) has been created.
1.
Create group B and add to the MACFF for Group B the static host IP addresses and interface 11.0.
2.
Associate VLAN 363 to interface 11.0.
3.
Since VLAN 363 is already created and associated with interface 11.0, enable MACFF for the VLAN 363/
4.
11.0 combination, with the MODE set to LEARNING.
Wait until the DHCP has renewed the leases for the hosts, then repeat step 4 but this time set the MODE
5.
to LOCALARPDISCARDING.
Note that in this configuration, there is a chance that a dynamically learned host matches what is already stati-
cally provisioned on the VLAN/interface. When the IP is therefore both static and dynamic, it has a type Both,
as shown in the following example.
