3C1-14 AIR BAG STEERING WHEEL AND COLUMN
1. Hole cover
1. Yellow connector (for air bag)
2. White connector (for auto cruise)
STEERING COLUMN
CAUTION:
D Once the steering column is removed from the vehicle,
the column is extremely susceptible to damage.
D Dropping the column assembly on its end could col-
lapse the steering shaft.
D Loosen the plastic shear pins which maintain column
length.
D Leaning on the column assembly could cause it to
bend or deform.
D Any of the above damage could impair the column's
collapsible design.
D Steering column mounting nuts should not be loos-
ened with steering shaft joint upper side bolt tightened
as this could cause damage to shaft joint bearing.
NOTE:
When servicing steering column or any column-mounted
component, remove steering wheel. But when removing
steering column simply to gain access to instrument panel
components, leave steering wheel installed on steering col-
umn.
REMOVAL
1) Disconnect negative battery cable at battery terminal.
2) Disable air bag system. Refer to "Disabling Air Bag System" un-
der "Service Precautions" earlier in this section.
3) Remove steering wheel and contact coil and combination
switch assembly, if necessary. Refer to "STEERING WHEEL"
and "CONTACT COIL AND COMBINATION SWITCH AS-
SEMBLY" earlier in this section.
4) Remove hole cover.
5) Loosen clamp.
6) Remove band binding steering column and harness (for contact
coil and combination switch assembly).
7) Disconnect yellow connector (for air bag) and white 4-P con-
nector (for auto cruise, optional).
