DIFFERENTIALS
B: INSTALLATION
1) Install the air breather cap by tapping with a
plastic hammer.
NOTE:
Install a new air breather cap.
2) Position the differential front member with the
vehicle body by passing the member under the
parking brake cable and securing it to rear differen-
tial.
NOTE:
When installing the differential front member of rear
differential, be careful not to mix up the order of in-
stallation with that for the upper and lower stop-
pers.
3) Install the DOJ of the drive shaft into the rear dif-
ferential. <Ref. to DI-53, REPLACEMENT, Rear
Differential Side Oil Seal.>

4) Installing procedure hereafter is in the reverse
order of removal.
5) After installing, fill the differential carrier with
gear oil up to the bottom of the filler plug hole. <Ref.
to DI-20, Differential Gear Oil.>
C: DISASSEMBLY
1. EXCEPT FOR STI MODEL
To detect the real cause of trouble, inspect the fol-
lowing items before disassembling.
• Tooth contact and backlash of hypoid driven
gear and drive pinion.
• Driven gear rear face runout limit
• Total preload of drive pinion
Rear Differential
1) Set the ST on vise and install the differential as-
sembly to ST.

2) Drain the gear oil by removing the plug.
3) Remove the air breather cap.
NOTE:
• Do not attempt to replace the air breather cap un-
less necessary.
• Whenever the air breather cap is removed, re-
place it with a new part.

4) Remove the bolts, and then remove the rear
cover.
NOTE:
Remove it by tapping with a plastic hammer.
