Conventional Brake Components
F r o n t B r a k e P a d I n s p e c t i o n a n d R e p l a c e m e n t
ACAUTION
Frequent inhalation of brake pad dust, regardless of
material c o m p o s i t i o n , could be hazardous to y o u r
health.
• A v o i d breathing dust particles.
• Never use an air hose or brush to clean brake
assemblies. Use an OSHA-approved v a c u u m
cleaner.
Inspection
1. Raise the f r o n t of the vehicle, and support it w i t h
safety stands in the proper locations (see page 1-7).
Remove the f r o n t wheels.
2. Check the thickness of the inner pad (A) and outer
pad (B). Do not include the thickness of the backing
plate.
Brake pad thickness:
Standard:
10.5—11.5 mm (0.41—0.45 in.)
Service limit: 1.6 m m (0.06 in.)
Inner pad
Replacement
1. Raise the front of the vehicle, and support it w i t h
safety stands in the proper locations (see page 1-7).
Remove the f r o n t wheels.
2. Remove the brake hose m o u n t i n g bolts (A).
3. Remove the flange bolt (B) and pivot the caliper (C)
up out of the w a y . Check the brake hose and pin
boots for damage and deterioration.
4. Remove the pad shims (A) and brake pads (B).
5. Check the hose and pin boots for damage and
deterioration.
3. If the brake pad thickness is less than the service
limit, replace all the front brake pads as a set.
