14. Remove the cotter pin (A) f r o m the upper a r m ball
joint, and loosen the nut (B).
NOTE: During installation, insert the new cotter pin
into the ball joint pin f r o m the f r o n t to the rear of
the vehicle, and bend its end as s h o w n .

15. Disconnect the upper a r m ball joint f r o m the
knuckle using the special tool (see page 18-12).
16. Remove the driveshaft o u t b o a r d joint (A) f r o m the
knuckle (B) by tapping the driveshaft end (C) w i t h a
plastic h a m m e r w h i l e d r a w i n g the hub o u t w a r d ,
then remove the knuckle.
NOTE: Do not pull the driveshaft end o u t w a r d . The
inner driveshaft joint m a y c o m e apart.
17. Install the knuckle/hub in the reverse order of
r e m o v a l , and note these items:
• Be careful not to damage the ball joint boot w h e n
installing the knuckle.
• Before connecting the lower arm ball joint to the
lower a r m , degrease the threaded section and
tapered portion of the ball joint pin, the lower
arm connecting hole, and the threaded section
and mating surface of the castle nut.
• First install all the c o m p o n e n t s and lightly tighten
the bolts and nuts, then raise the suspension to
load it w i t h the vehicle's w e i g h t before fully
tightening to the specified torque values. Do not
place the jack against the ball joint pin of the
knuckle.
• Tighten all m o u n t i n g hardware to the specified
torque values.
• Torque the castle nut to the lower torque
specification, then tighten it only far enough to
align the slot w i t h the ball joint pin hole. Do not
align the castle nut by loosening it.
• Install a new cotter pin on the castle nut after
t o r q u i n g .
• Use a new spindle nut on reassembly.
• Before installing the spindle nut, apply a small
a m o u n t of engine oil to the seating surface of the
nut. After t i g h t e n i n g , use a drift to stake the
spindle nut shoulder against the driveshaft.
• Before installing the brake disc, clean the mating
surface of the front hub and the inside of the
brake disc.
• Before installing the w h e e l , clean the mating
surface of the brake disc and the inside of the
w h e e l .
• Check the front wheel alignment, and adjust it if
necessary (see page 18-7).
