A / C Service Tips and Precautions
A / C Refrigerant Oil Replacement
A WARNING
• Compressed air m i x e d w i t h the R-134a f o r m s a
combustible vapor.
• The vapor can burn or explode causing serious
injury.
• Never use compressed air to pressure test
R-134a service e q u i p m e n t or vehicle air
conditioning systems.
ACAUTION
• Air conditioning refrigerant or lubricant vapor
can irritate your eyes, nose, or throat.
• Be careful w h e n connecting service equipment.
• Do not breathe refrigerant or vapor.
The air conditioning system uses HFC-134a (R-134a)
refrigerant and Polyol Ester (POE) refrigerant oil, w h i c h
are not compatible w i t h CFC-12 (R-12) refrigerant and
mineral oil. Do not use R-12 refrigerant or mineral oil in
this s y s t e m , and do not attempt to use R-12 servicing
e q u i p m e n t ; damage to the air c o n d i t i o n i n g system or
y o u r servicing equipment w i l l result.
Use only service e q u i p m e n t that is U.L.-listed and is
certified to meet the requirements of SAE J2210 to
r e m o v e R-134a f r o m the air c o n d i t i o n i n g system.
If accidental system discharge occurs, ventilate w o r k
area before resuming service.
R-134a service equipment or vehicle air conditioning
systems should not be pressure tested or leak tested
w i t h compressed air.
Additional health and safety i n f o r m a t i o n may be
obtained f r o m the refrigerant and lubricant
manufacturers.
• A l w a y s disconnect the negative cable f r o m the
battery whenever replacing air c o n d i t i o n i n g parts.
• Keep moisture and dirt out of the system. W h e n
disconnecting any lines, plug or cap the fittings
immediately; don't remove the caps or plugs until
just before you reconnect each line.
• Before connecting any hose or line, apply a f e w drops
of refrigerant oil to the O-ring.
• W h e n tightening or loosening a f i t t i n g , use a second
w r e n c h to support the matching f i t t i n g .
• W h e n discharging the s y s t e m , use an R-134a
refrigerant recovery/recycling/charging station; don't
release refrigerant into the atmosphere.
A WARNING
Using the w r o n g refrigerant oil increases the
chance of electric shock or death.
• Use only SANDEN SE-10Y refrigerant oil w h e n
servicing the A/C system.
Required POE refrigerant oil: SANDEN SE-10Y
• P/N 38899-RCJ-J01: 120 mL (4 fl-oz)
The A/C compressor in this vehicle is powered by the
high-voltage (144 V) battery m o d u l e , and this oil is
required because it has unique electrical insulting
qualities.
Adding refrigerant oil to the system
A d d the r e c o m m e n d e d refrigerant oil to the suction port
of the A/C compressor in the a m o u n t listed if you
replace any of the f o l l o w i n g parts.
• To avoid c o n t a m i n a t i o n , do not return the oil to the
container once dispensed, and never mix it w i t h other
refrigerant oils.
• Immediately after using the oil, dispose of any
remaining oil in the container, due to moisture
absorption and short shelf life.
• Do not spill the refrigerant oil on the vehicle; it may
damage the paint; if it gets on the paint, wash it off
immediately.
