DTC P0723: Output Shaft (Countershaft)
Speed Sensor Intermittent Failure
NOTE:
• Record all freeze data and review General
Troubleshooting Information (see page 14-4) before
y o u troubleshoot.
• This code is caused by an electrical circuit p r o b l e m
and cannot be caused by a mechanical p r o b l e m in the
transmission.
1. Record all freeze data, and clear the DTC w i t h the
HDS.
2. Test-drive the vehicle for more than 10 minutes
under the same conditions as those indicated by
the freeze data. Slow d o w n and stop the wheels.
3. M o n i t o r the OBD status for P0723 in the DTCs/
Freeze Data in A/T Mode M e n u for a pass/fail.
Does the result indicate
a fail?
Y E S — G o t o step 4.
NO—Intermittent failure, the system is OK at this
t i m e . Check for poor connections and loose
terminals at the output shaft (countershaft) speed
sensor and the PCM. If the tester indicates NOT
COMPLETE, return to step 2 and recheck. •
4. Turn the ignition switch OFF.
5. Disconnect the output shaft (countershaft) speed
sensor connector, and inspect the connector and
connector terminals to be sure they are making
g o o d contact.
Are the connector
terminals
OK?
Y E S — G o t o step 6.
NO—Repair the connector terminals, then go to
step 6.
6. Connect the output shaft (countershaft) speed
sensor connector.
7. Test-drive the vehicle for several minutes, and
m o n i t o r the OBD status for P0723 in the DTCs/
Freeze Data in A/T Mode M e n u for a pass/fail.
Does the result indicate
a fail?
YES—Go to step 8.
NO—The p r o b l e m has been corrected. If the tester
indicates NOT COMPLETE, return to step 7 and
recheck. •
8. Turn the ignition switch OFF.
9. J u m p the SCS line w i t h the HDS.
10. Disconnect PCM connector B (24P).
11. Disconnect the output shaft (countershaft) speed
sensor connector.
12. Check for continuity between output shaft
(countershaft) speed sensor connector terminal
No. 2 and body g r o u n d .

Is there
continuity?
YES—Repair a short to g r o u n d in the w i r e between
PCM connector terminal B19 and the output shaft
(countershaft) speed sensor connector, then go to
step 19.
N O — G o t o step 13.
