Grade Logic Control: Ascending Control
W h e n the PCM determines that the vehicle is climbing a hill in the D and D3 positions, the system extends the
engagement area of 2nd gear, 3rd gear, and 4th gear to prevent the transmission f r o m frequently shifting between
2nd and 3rd gears, between 3rd and 4th gears, and between 4th and 5th gears, so the vehicle can run s m o o t h and
have more power w h e n needed.
NOTE: Shift c o m m a n d s stored in the PCM between 2nd and 3rd gears, between 3rd and 4th gears, and between 4th
and 5th gears, enable the PCM to automatically select the most suitable gear according to the m a g n i t u d e of a gradient.

Grade Logic Control: Descending Control
W h e n the PCM determines that the vehicle is going d o w n a hill in the D and D3 positions, the shift-up speed f r o m 4th
to 5th gear, 3rd to 4th gear, and f r o m 2nd to 3rd (when the throttle is closed) becomes faster than the set speed for flat
road driving to w i d e n the 4th gear, 3rd gear, and 2nd gear driving areas. This, in c o m b i n a t i o n w i t h engine braking
f r o m the deceleration lock-up, achieves s m o o t h driving w h e n the vehicle is descending. There are three descending
modes w i t h different 4th gear driving areas, 3rd gear driving areas and 2nd gear driving areas according to the
magnitude of a gradient stored in the PCM. W h e n the vehicle is in 5th or 4th gear and y o u are decelerating w h i l e
applying the brakes on a steep hill, the transmission w i l l d o w n s h i f t to a lower gear. W h e n y o u accelerate, the
transmission w i l l then return to a higher gear.

Deceleration Control
W h e n the vehicle goes around a corner and needs to decelerate first and then accelerate, the PCM sets the data for
deceleration control to reduce the n u m b e r of t i m e s the transmission shifts. W h e n the vehicle is decelerating f r o m
speeds above 27 m p h (43 km/h), the PCM shifts the transmission f r o m 5th or 4th to 2nd earlier than n o r m a l to cope
w i t h u p c o m i n g acceleration.
