Conventional Brake Components

Rapid brake pad wear, vehicle vibration
(after a long drive), or hard brake pedal
1. Drive the vehicle until the brakes drag or until the
pedal is high and hard. This can take 20 or more
brake pedal applications d u r i n g an extended test-
drive.
2. W i t h the engine r u n n i n g , raise the vehicle on a lift,
and spin all four wheels by hand.
Is there brake drag at any of the wheels?
Y E S — G o t o step 3.
NO—Look for other causes of the pad wear, high
pedal, or vehicle v i b r a t i o n . •
3. Turn the engine off, p u m p the brake pedal to
deplete the v a c u u m in the brake booster, and then
spin the wheels again to check f o r brake drag.
Is there brake drag at any of the wheels?
Y E S — G o t o step 4.
NO—Replace the brake booster (see page 19-19). •
4. W i t h o u t r e m o v i n g the brake lines, unbolt and
separate the master cylinder f r o m the booster, then
spin the wheels to check for brake drag.
Is there brake drag at any of the wheels?
Y E S — G o t o step 5.
NO—Check the brake pedal position switch
adjustment and pedal free play (see page 19-5). •
5. Loosen the hydraulic lines at the master cylinder,
then spin the wheels to check for brake drag.
Is there brake drag at any of the wheels?
Y E S — G o t o step 6.
NO—Replace the master cylinder (see page 19-16).
6. Loosen the bleeder screws at each caliper, then
spin the wheels to check for brake drag (see page
19-9).
Is there brake drag at any of the wheels?
YES—Disassemble and repair the caliper on the
wheel(s) w i t h brake drag. •
NO—Look for a bulging master cylinder cap seal,
discolored or contaminated brake fluid in the
master cylinder, or d a m a g e d brake lines. If any of
these items are d a m a g e d , replace t h e m . If all of
these items are OK, replace the ABS/TCS
modulator-control unit (see page 1 9 - 7 9 ) . •
