4.349 Hybrid Balance Test Process: With the Hybrid Balance Test process you can assess
the degree of impedance mismatching present between a loop/ground start trunk and a trunk
port connected to it. With accurate measurements of echo return loss (ERL), you can optimize
the loop/ground start trunk interface to minimize echo. IP endpoints that connect to the Public
Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) across loop/ground start trunks may be noticeably
reduced echo after carrying out the hybrid balance test process.
4.350 In v9.115 and later, the "Measured Echo Return Loss (ERL)" and "Last Hybrid Balance
Test Timestamp" flags have been added to the Trunks folder in DB Programming. See
256
for details about these flags.
4.351 To run a Hybrid Balance Test: Use the Hybrid Balance Test feature to verify loop/
ground start trunk characteristics and to determine the optimal Hybrid Balance setting for each
CO trunk port interface. To establish optimal Hybrid Balance setting for each loop/ground start
trunk, you will need to carry out the following process and applicable procedures in sequence.
Exceptions to the Rule: For the performance of the following procedures only, you may
enter the On-Line Mode (OLM) mode without the supervision of Inter-Tel Technical Support
personnel. Any further or other programming in OLM mode is strictly prohibited without spe-
cific guidance from Inter-Tel Technical Support personnel.

4.352 To obtain and maintain optimal Hybrid Balance settings for individual loop/ground start
trunk ports, adhere to the following guidelines:
Perform the test on each port at initial installation of the system.
Perform the test whenever a loop/ground start trunk connection is added or changed.
Run the test on a system that is idle or nearly idle.
Run the test until the greatest Echo Return Loss (ERL) measurement is within ±2 dB
twice in a row, as shown in Expanded Message Print. If the trunk port interface is opti-
mally balanced, successive ERL readings should not vary a great deal.
