11. SYSTEM BACKUP AND RECOVERY

11.1 This section describes system backup and recovery.
A. RECOVERY BACKUP
11.2 Hard drives are now partitioned with a C drive partition (for the operating system and
applications) and an E drive partition (for recovery backup files). The D drive is the CD/DVD
drive. Windows is set up at the factory to automatically back up (save) important application
data to the E drive partition using the built-in Windows backup/scheduling programs.
NOTE:
procedures. See
respectively.
11.3 If the product originally shipped with an E:\Backup directory, the unit is configured to
back up critical database files to E:\Backup every Sunday at 2:00 A.M. using the Local System
Account (NT Authority). The batch file that performs this operation can be found in ITAdmin-
istrator\My Documents. This backup is solely intended to be used in the event of a system re-
image from the supplied recovery CD/DVD. It is strongly recommended that an off-unit
backup be performed before applying this new image. However, if a backup is not available,
use the files on E:\Backup to restore the customer's data. Deleting the Windows Scheduled
Task or the batch file itself will prevent this backup from occurring.
NOTE:
eligible for remote support and assistance, do not modify this account.
11.4 For details about the recovery backup procedure, refer to the Recovery Instructions for
PC-Based Products (document part number 835.2759) that is included in the recovery CD/
DVD. For details about the recovery backup procedure on an Enterprise
refer to the Enterprise Messaging Installation Manual (document part number 780.8006).
B. GHOST RECOVERY CD/DVD
11.5 The ghost recovery CD/DVD that is shipped with the C/E partitioned products only re-
images the C partition, not the E partition. This way, you can re-image the C partition to bring
the unit back to the original factory installation, but still have access to the current application
data on the E drive. You will, however, need to reload any Inter-Tel applications and service
packs that are not included in the original factory installation. If the unit did not originally con-
tain an E:\Backup directory, the entire drive will be re-imaged. To recover the system, follow
the instructions in the Recovery Instructions for PC-Based Products (document part number
835.2759) that is included in the recovery CD/DVD-ROM.
In some circumstances beyond Inter-Tel's control, the recovery process may re-label the
drive partitions different from Inter-Tel's factory settings. This is usually caused by third party
partitioning programs, changes in cabling, or the addition of non-factory devices. After
recovering the unit, verify that the system contains the C:\ partition, the CD/DVD is labeled
D:\, and the Recovery Backup partition is labeled E:\. These settings can be viewed by
accessing the Disk Administrator within Windows. If these settings are not as described, use
Disk Administrator to rename the partitions to their original factory settings. Failure to
employ these settings will prevent the recovery backup script from executing.
