40.14 When users enter
appears.
The first line shows the first match with
an underscore to indicate the number
of characters that the user has
entered. In this case, three digits (352)
were entered.
40.15 The list of matches is in alphabetical order except that an alphabetical order of exact
matches shows first. An exact match occurs when users enter a string and matches a name
exactly (that is, the user has entered all typeable characters in the name).
40.16 In general, the algorithm shows exact matches and then shows partial matches. Both
lists of matches will be in alphabetical order with respect to the first letter. If more than one
exact match exists, these will be in alphabetical order (with respect to the first letter) as well
and before the list of partial matches. If a user presses an invalid button that would make the
list of matches empty, the display does not change, and a beep occurs to indicate an error.
40.17 For any number string, there will be a number of exact and partial matches initially, but
the list will become smaller as the user enters more numbers. For example, the user can search
for "MONICA SALES" by entering
any time when the list contains "MONICA SALES." If the database is programmed correctly,
the user can search for the same person by entering
to search for "SALES, MONICA" as an alternative. Most likely, users will not need to enter
the entire number string in either case.
40.18 To dial the user in the first line, whose extension appears in the second line, press
the pound/hash (
available on a six-line display endpoint.

If an entry has more characters than can fit in
the width of the display, the user sees only
those characters that will fit with an underscore
at the end of the entry. The first line then scrolls
as the user enters past the screen (and scrolls
back if the user backspaces).
A six-line display endpoint shows three possi-
ble matches at a time. Note that the entries
on the first and third lines are the same (that
is, they refer to the same extension).
