IP Addressing

8.8
Most small, local static networks are in the class C range. These IP addresses are in the
range 192.0.1.0 to 223.255.254.0. If your network is in this range, the first three octets of each
IP address must be the same for each device. For example, all members of a given static subnet
must have an IP address of 192.168.200.x, where x is a number 1 to 254. The subnet mask
must be 255.255.255.0 so that each device on the subnet can see all of the other devices. If you
are skilled at segmenting a subnet, then the masking can be changed; otherwise, leave it at the
default.
8.9
Every device on the subnet should have the same subnet mask. In other words, if the
subnet mask is at default (i.e., 255.255.255.0), the IP address designated as xxx.xxx.xxx.yyy will
see any other IP device with identical x values in the IP address. These devices, however, will
not see any other devices that do not have matching x values. For example, if the subnet mask
is default, a device with the IP address of 192.168.200.201 will not communicate with IP
address 192.168.1.200, but it will communicate with 192.168.200.200. For this reason, Inter-
Tel strongly recommends that you consult a networking professional prior to changing the IP
address or subnet mask of any device.

Finding the CPC IP Address

8.10 A server dynamically assigns the IP address to the IP port on the CPC if DHCP or
BOOTP is enabled in DB Programming. You can view Message Print at boot up to determine
this IP address. If Message Print is not active, you can check the IP address in the ARP table.
8.11 To check the ARP table:
Open a command prompt console on your PC.
1.
Type arp -a and press
2.
and their corresponding IP addresses.
If the CPC has a known IP address, it should be listed in the table.
3.
If the CPC is not in the table, try to "ping" the IP address that you believe is assigned to
the CPC.
NOTE:

Defaulting the CPC IP Settings

8.12 The values in the System\Devices and Feature Codes\IP Ports\PPXXX folder are NOT
changed when you use Session Manager to default the database. To default these settings man-
ually, set the following values in DB Programming (System\Devices and Feature Codes\IP
Ports\<IP Port>):
Current IP Address: 192.168.200.201
Current Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.255.0
Current Gateway: 192.168.0.1
Current WINS Server: 0.0.0.0
Static IP Address: 192.168.200.201
Static Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Static Gateway: 192.168.0.1
Static WINS Server: 0.0.0.0
