C. SIP GATEWAYS
11.20 The system supports SIP (Session Initiated Protocol) trunks to reach the CO. SIP trunks
allow the system to communicate with the CO via SIP-enabled gateways. As the SIP protocol
becomes more and more popular, it is important to be able to communicate to SIP gateways in
the IP-centric world. Inter-Tel currently supports:
Quintum
AudioCodes
11.21 For details about the SIP gateways, refer to the Inter-Tel Axxess/5000 Quintum SIP
Gateway Installation Manual (document part no. 835.3123) or the Inter-Tel Axxess/5000 Audi-
oCodes MP-114 SIP Gateway Installation Manual (document part no. 835.3202)
11.22 The SIP Gateways field (System\Trunk-Related Information\SIP Gateways) contains a
name and description field for the gateway. When you double-click the gateway you jump to
the programming fields for SIP trunks.

Programming SIP Trunks

11.23 At least one SIP gateway must exist at all times (even in a default system) because it
follows the model of a CO trunk group. To allow the system to communicate with the CO
through a SIP gateway, the following fields must be programmed:
11.24 SIP Trunks: SIP trunks allow the system to communicate with the CO via SIP-enabled
gateways. When you access the SIP Trunks folder under System\Trunk-Related informa-
tion\SIP Gateways\<Gateway>\SIP Trunks, the Extension, Value, Type, and Address fields for
the SIP Trunk are displayed. SIP trunks have the following functionality:
They are transparent to the system user because SIP trunks act like any other CO trunk
in the system.
They support transferring trunks, putting trunks on hold, and connecting trunks to con-
ferences similar to other CO trunks in the system.
They support making and receiving calls by any endpoint.
They support peer-to-peer audio by IP endpoints.
They reside in CO trunk groups just like other trunks so that SIP trunk calls can be
routed using Automatic Route Selection (ARS)
11.25 If you double-click a SIP trunk, you jump to the SIP trunk programming fields. Pro-
gram the following fields for the SIP trunk:
Call Configuration: Defines the setting that SIP gateways will use when connected to
a call. After programmed, you assign each SIP trunk a specific Call Configuration. This
allows you to program one call configuration for multiple trunks. By default, all IP
devices are placed in Call Configuration 1, which is programmable. This option is also
located under System\IP-Related Information\Call Configurations.
CO Trunk Group: Defines the CO trunk group to which SIP trunks can be moved.
Because SIP trunks are considered CO trunks, this feature functions just like other
trunks. By default, they are placed in PP011. This option is also located under Sys-
tem\Devices and Feature Codes\CO Trunk Groups.
Network Group: Defines the network group to which SIP trunks are assigned. By
default, they are assigned to the PP029 network group. This option is also located under
System\Devices and Feature Codes\Network Groups.
