This figure shows the three types of networking: IP Resource Card (IPRC), IP Net-

working Module (IPNM), and T1 connections (PRI). Each type can communicate directly with

another node that uses the same type. For example:

Phoenix and Austin can speak directly to each other via the IP Networking Module.

Austin and Dallas can speak directly to each other via the T1 connection (PRI).

San Diego and Dallas can speak directly to each other via the IP Resource Card (IPRC).

Nodes with different networking types can also communicate with each other, but not

directly. To communicate with a dissimilar node, the call must be routed through a node with

the same networking type. For example, if Phoenix needs to call Dallas, the call must first go

through Austin. For Austin to speak with San Diego, the call must first go through Dallas.

With proper planning and design of call routing patterns, an IP private network can be opti-

mized such that no more than one hop is required between dissimilar nodes.

A Private Network Combining IPRCs and T1/PRIs Modules

ATM nodes can also be included in the private network.
