Diagnostic System
W h e n t h e powertrain control m o d u l e (PCM) senses an
a b n o r m a l i t y in the input or output s y s t e m , the D
indicator (A) in the gauge assembly (B) w i l l usually
blink.
B
W h e n the Honda diagnostic system (HDS) is connected
to the data link connector (DLC) (A) (located under the
steering c o l u m n lower cover), it w i l l indicate the
diagnostic trouble code (DTC) w h e n the ignition switch
is turned ON (II) and the appropriate m e n u is selected.
If the D indicator or malfunction indicator lamp (MIL)
has been reported o n , or if a driveability p r o b l e m is
suspected, f o l l o w this procedure:
1. Connect the HDS to the DLC. (See the HDS user's
manual f o r specific instructions.)
2. Turn the ignition switch ON (II), select A/T system,
and observe the DTC in the DTCs MENU on the
HDS screen.
3. Record all fuel and emissions DTCs, and A/T DTCs,
and freeze data.
4. If there is a fuel and emissions DTC, first check the
fuel and emissions system as indicated by the DTC
(except for DTC P0700; DTC P0700 means there is
one or more A/T DTCs, and no problems w e r e
detected in the fuel and emissions circuit of the
PCM).
5. Clear the DTC and data.
6. Drive the vehicle for several minutes under the
same conditions as those indicated by the freeze
data, and then recheck for a DTC. If the A/T DTC
returns, go to the DTC t r o u b l e s h o o t i n g index. If the
DTC does not return, there w a s an intermittent
p r o b l e m w i t h i n the circuit. Make sure all pins and
terminals in the circuit are tight.
S y m p t o m Troubleshooting Versus DTC
Troubleshooting
S o m e s y m p t o m s w i l l not trigger diagnostic trouble
codes (DTCs) or cause the D indicator to blink. If the
malfunction indicator l a m p (MIL) w a s reported on or
the D indicator has been blinking, check f o r DTCs. If the
vehicle has an a b n o r m a l s y m p t o m , and there are no
DTCs stored, go to the s y m p t o m t r o u b l e s h o o t i n g index.
Check the list of probable cause(s) f o r the s y m p t o m in
the sequence listed, until y o u f i n d the p r o b l e m .
