PCM Updating and S u b s t i t u t i o n for Testing
Special Tools Required
Honda Interface Module (HIM) EQS05A35570
Use this procedure w h e n you have to substitute a
k n o w n - g o o d PCM in a troubleshooting procedure.
Update the PCM only if the PCM does not already have
the latest software loaded.
Do not t u r n the ignition switch OFF w h i l e updating the
PCM. If y o u turn the ignition switch OFF, the PCM can
be d a m a g e d .
H o w t o Update t h e PCM
NOTE:
• To ensure the latest p r o g r a m is installed, update a
PCM w h e n e v e r the PCM is substituted or replaced.
• Select A/T in the HIM ECM/PCM Update m e n u , and
update the A/T system on the PCM. Update the PGM-
FI system on the PCM if necessary, according to the
update software.
• You cannot update a PCM w i t h the p r o g r a m it already
has. It w i l l only accept a new p r o g r a m .
• Before you update the PCM, make sure the vehicle's
battery is fully charged.
• To prevent PCM damage, do not operate any
electrical system; audio system, brakes, air
c o n d i t i o n i n g , power w i n d o w s , m o o n r o o f , and door
locks, during the update.
• If you need to diagnose the Honda interface m o d u l e
(HIM) because the HIM's red ( # 3) light came on or
was flashing during the update, leave the ignition
switch in the ON (II) position w h e n y o u disconnect the
HIM f r o m the DLC. This w i l l prevent PCM damage.
1. Turn the ignition switch ON (II). Do not start the
engine.
2. Connect the Honda interface m o d u l e (HIM) to the
DLC (A).
3. Update the PCM according to the procedures
described on the HIM label. If the software in the
PCM is the latest, replace the PCM.
H o w t o Remove and Install t h e PCM
1. Pull back the carpet, and remove the driver's and
passenger's center lower covers and rear vent
ducts (see page 20-73).
2. Connect the HDS to the DLC.
3. Turn the ignition switch OFF.
4. J u m p the SCS line w i t h the HDS.
5. Disconnect PCM connectors.
6. Remove the PCM.
7. I n s t a l l t h e PCM i n t h e r e v e r s e o r d e r o f t h e r e m o v a l .
H o w t o End a Troubleshooting Session
This procedure must be done after any t r o u b l e s h o o t i n g .
1. Turn the ignition switch OFF.
2. Connect the HDS to the DLC.
3. Turn the ignition switch ON (II).
4. Clear the DTC(s) on the HDS screen.
5. To verify that the problem is repaired, test-drive the
vehicle for several minutes at speeds over 30 m p h
(50 km/h) or in freeze data range.
