IMA System
• The IMA (Integrated M o t o r Assisted) system uses
high voltage (144 V) circuits. Be sure to shut off the
electrical circuits and isolate the IMA system and
related parts before servicing the IMA system.
• The high voltage cables and their covers are
identified by orange coloring. The caution labels are
attached to high voltage and other related parts
(see page 1-4). Be careful not to touch these cables
and parts w i t h o u t adequate protective gear.
The front floor under-cover protecting the high
voltage cables is marked Ss-
• If the 12 V battery has been discharged, or its cable
has been disconnected, or the M C M (Motor Control
Module) has been reset, the IMA battery level gauge
(BAT) w i l l not display the state of charge w h e n the
engine is started. Start the engine, and hold it
between 3,500 rpm and 4,000 r p m w i t h o u t load (in
Park or neutral) until the level gauge (BAT) displays at
least three segments.
• Observe the f o l l o w i n g instructions w h e n inspecting
or servicing the IMA system.
- W h e n the IMA system indicator is o n , perform the
IMA system troubleshooting first (see page 12-5).
- Wear insulated gloves w h e n e v e r y o u inspect or
service the IMA system. Be sure to check the gloves
for pin holes, tears, or other damage.
- Turn the battery module switch OFF, and secure
the switch in the OFF position w i t h the locking
cover before servicing the IMA system (see Turning
off power to the high voltage circuit).
- Wait for 5 or more minutes after t u r n i n g off the
battery m o d u l e switch, then disconnect the
negative cable f r o m the 1 2 V battery (it takes about
5 minutes for the PDU capacitor to discharge).
- Before disconnecting the high voltage cable
terminals, make sure that the voltage between the
terminals is below 30 V w h e n measured w i t h a
voltmeter.
• W h e n servicing the parts w i t h o u t the insulating
sheath, be sure to use the insulated tools to prevent
short circuiting.
• The rotor assembly contains very strong magnets
and should be handled w i t h special care. People w i t h
pacemakers or other magnetically sensitive medical
devices should not handle the rotor assembly.
• Use the special tool to remove or install the rotor
assembly.
A
W A R N I N G
If the rotor is installed by hand, it may suddenly be
pulled t o w a r d the stator w i t h great force causing
serious hand or finger injury. A l w a y s use the
special tool to remove or install a rotor assembly.
• Keep the rotor assembly a w a y f r o m magnetically
sensitive devices.
• After disconnecting the high voltage terminals,
busbars, etc., insulate the parts w i t h insulated tape.
• As a safety w a r n i n g , attach a sign saying, " W O R K I N G
ON HIGH VOLTAGE PARTS. DO NOT T O U C H ! " to the
steering w h e e l .
Disconnecting the motor power cable connector from
the motor stator
Push the tabs (A), then raise the lever (B). Remove the
m o t o r power cable (C) f r o m the m o t o r startor.
NOTE:
• If the m o t o r power cable connector is dirty, clean it.
• Cover the disconnected connector (D) w i t h a plastic bag
(E) , and w r a p the motor power cable terminals w i t h tape
(F) .
• If the m o t o r power cable is w e t , w a i t until it is dry.
