C. WINDOWS INSTALLATION AND CONFIGURATION
14.15 The Voice Processing PC is shipped with Windows NT Workstation (version 4.0 with
Service Pack 5) or Windows 2000 (with Service Pack 4) already installed and properly set up.
If necessary, you can re-install Windows using the instructions outlined in Microsoft's installa-
tion manual, while observing the items listed below:
Microsoft Updates. Inter-Tel Engineering routinely updates its Windows-based house and
lab systems with critical updates from Microsoft as they become available. Should Inter-Tel
become aware of a problem with any such update, Inter-Tel Engineering, in a timely man-
ner, instructs the reseller channel to not install the offending critical update. The notifica-
tion is e-mailed to all "Inter-Tel Technical Hot List" subscribers and posted under Tech
Central on the edGe. For readers located in Europe, contact the Inter-Tel Europe office for
technical information.
Inter-Tel encourages all customers to include their Windows-based products in their secu-
rity umbrella and to update them as they would any other mission critical component on
their system. Along this line, some Inter-Tel products are pre-configured to automatically
download critical updates once a week, but not to automatically install them as that may
require a reboot.
Because Inter-Tel is not given any advance notice regarding Microsoft critical updates,
Engineering is unable to test them ahead of time. As with any non-Inter-Tel update, Inter-
Tel cannot be responsible if a Microsoft critical update causes an Inter-Tel software appli-
cation to fail. However, Inter-Tel responds to the issue in a timely manner.

14.16 The following optional Windows software configuration changes can be made if neces-
sary.
Voice Processing (Avdap) Service
14.17 The Voice Processing software is designed to start as a service using the default system
service account. After started, it attempts to logon as a network user to gain network access,
and, if necessary, it continues to try to log on about once a minute until it either succeeds or is
terminated. However, these attempts do not delay the start of Voice Processing features, other
than Unified Messaging. While the network connection is down (either while the service is
awaiting logon or because of a later failure), Unified Messaging and activities, such as print
report or save/restore, mapped to a network location fail. After the logon succeeds and while
the network is up, activities involving the network connection succeeds.
14.18 Voice Processing starts up automatically and does not require a user to log on to Win-
dows in order to start it. However, the service must wait for "log on" to get access to network
resources in the following situations:

If the customer's E-mail system is configured to MAPI, the service needs to log on so
that it can access the E-mail server.
The B: drive is mapped to a network drive; the service needs to log on so that it can
access the directory on the network drive.
