A. IC DIRECTORY
Finding a User in the IC Directory
40.7 The traditional IC directory allows the user to find another user by entering the display
name, which corresponds to the Username field or the extension number in DB Programming
(under System\Devices and Feature Codes\Stations).
40.8 Non-IDS Limitation: The limitation of using only the Username field is that it holds
only 10 characters, which is inadequate for holding both first and last names. Therefore, the
names in the current IC directory may not reflect the criterion that a user may apply to find
another user (for example, the administrator might have all usernames programmed to the first
name of the endpoint's owner, but a particular user knows only the last name of the person he
or she is seeking).
40.9 IDS Functionality: IDS seeks to improve that aspect by using the Description field
(under System\Devices and Feature Codes\Stations). Currently, for Voice Mail, the administra-
tor is advised to program the description to "last_name, first_name" because Voice Mail has a
similar searching algorithm. The Description field can hold up to 20 characters, which will be
adequate to hold most users' first and last names. This requires the administrator to program
"last_name, first_name" (as much as possible) in the Description field. Note that the field is
case-sensitive, therefore, IDS will display "Bond, James" rather than "BOND, JAMES" if that
is what the administrator programmed into the database. When using this method, the algo-
rithm considers everything before the comma as the last name and everything after the comma
as the first name. For example, a user named "Billy Bob Via Linda" should have his descrip-
tion programmed as "Via Linda, Billy Bob." Be careful with descriptions like "Smith, George
IP" to indicate that this extension is George Smith's IP phone because IDS will interpret the
name is "George IP Smith."
40.10 To allow the user to search by using either the first or last name, the directory effec-
tively has two entries for each user. Although the existing IC directory allows searching by the
extension number, which is essentially a reverse lookup, IDS does not currently support this
function because there would be three entries for each user and reverse lookup is not a very
useful feature in the IC directory.
40.11 Note that the user does not have to enter spaces or punctuation marks. For example, if
the Description field for a user is "BOND, JAMES," the algorithm will match both the IDS
equivalent of "BONDJAMES" (266352637) and the IDS equivalent of "JAMESBOND"
(526372663). Because what the user is entering does not match what the user sees on the dis-
play (there may be spaces and punctuation marks), the cursor will always be immediately after
the last matched character except in the case of secondary extension, which will always have
an asterisk in the first column to indicate a secondary extension (see
