Removing

- Remove and refit
Pistons and/or rings - extra each
See operation 12.17.10.
CONNECTING RODS AND PISTONS
- Overhaul
Gudgeon pin bush - each - remove and refit
Special tools: 5335, 5336-4

Dismantling
2.
Remove the two circlips retaining the gudgeon pin in
the piston.
3.
Push out the gudgeon pin and separate the piston
from the connecting rod but mark for reassembly.
4.
Remove from the piston the two compression rings
and the oil control ring.
5.
Repeat operations 2 to 4 on the remaining pistons
and connecting rod assemblies.
6.
Degrease all components and remove carbon deposits
from the pistons.

Examination and checking
7.
Check the top dimension (A) of the pistons across the
ring lands at right angles to the gudgeon pin - see
Data.
8.
Check the dimension (B) of the pistons across the
skirt at right angles to the gudgeon pin - see Data.
NOTE: The grade of each bore Le. (A) or (B) is stamped on
the cylinder block. The piston grade (A) or (B) is
stamped on the piston crown, as illustrated.
9.
Check the dimensions of the piston ring grooves and
the gap between the piston ring and piston groove -
see Data.
10.
Examine the gudgeon pin for scores and pitting.
Check for wear - see data, and note that the gudgeon
pin should be a light finger push fit in the piston at a
temperature of 68°F.
