S9300&S9300E Terabit Routing Switch
Configuration Guide - Network Management

10.1 Packet Capture Overview

The packet capture function captures packets matching the specified rules and sends these
packets to a remote server. This function improves network maintenance efficiency and reduces
maintenance costs.
Switches on a network transmit various services, and network administrators often need to
capture packets on switches to locate faults. The S9300&S9300E switch does not support remote
mirroring; therefore, administrators need to capture packets using local mirroring onsite. If
packets need to be captured on an optical interface, an optical-to-electrical converter must be
installed on the interface, reducing maintenance efficiency. The packet capture function allows
administrators to capture packet remotely. The captured packet information is saved in a
*.cap file on a TFTP or FTP server or the CF card of the switch.

Capturing Service Packets

When a fault occurs on an S9300&S9300E switch, you can configure the packet capture function.
The switch then captures packets matching the specified rules, and sends captured packet
information to a TFTP or FTP server or saves information in the CF card for you to analyze.
This function improves maintenance efficiency and reduces maintenance cost.
Capturing Packets Sent to the CPU
Some faults cannot be located by capturing service packets. The S9300&S9300E can capture
packets sent to the CPU, and send captured packet information to a TFTP or FTP server or save
information in the CF card. You can analyze the packets sent to the CPU to find causes of the
fault.
10.3 Capturing Service Packets
Before capturing service packets on an S9300&S9300E switch, familiarize yourself with the
applicable environment, complete the pre-configuration tasks, and obtain the data required for
the configuration. This will help you complete the configuration task quickly and accurately.
