5. Basic Terms and Features
This chapter explains IP-related basic terms and features that are used in the system. For more detailed informa-
tion, refer to the reference documents.
5.1

Basic Terms

Registration
To support communication between IP devices/stations and the Telephony Server, the IP addresses of them must
be notified each other. This process is called registration. The Telephony Server notifies the IP address of the
selected PHx to the IP device/station, and the IP device/station notifies the IP address of the device/station to
the PHx.
Peer-to-Peer Connection
A networking framework where devices or stations communicate directly with each other, without the use of an
access point (AP). The Telephony Server establishes the connection between them. However, once the connec-
tion has been established, voice packets are directly exchanged between them.
MAC Address(Media Access Control Address)
Standardized data link layer address required for every port or device connecting to a LAN. Other devices in the
network use these addresses to locate specific ports in the network and to create and update routing tables and
data structures. MAC addresses are 6 bytes long and are controlled by the IEEE. Also known as a hardware ad-
dress, MAC-layer address, and physical address. When a DtermIP is used in MAC authentication mode, the Ex-
tension Number can be assigned in conjunction with this MAC Address. Refer to MAC Authentication for more
details.

DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol)

Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol. A TCP/IP protocol enabling IP devices/stations to get temporary or per-
manent IP addresses out of a pool from centrally-administered servers - DHCP servers. DHCP provides a mech-
anism for allocating IP addresses manually, automatically and dynamically, so addresses can be reused when
hosts no longer need them.

DRS

DRS (Device Registration Server) is a module that is embedded in the Telephony Server. DRS controls the reg-
istration of IP devices/terminals.
Gatekeeper
An H.323 entity providing address translation, control access and bandwidth management to the LAN for H.323
terminals, gateways and MCU's.
Location ID
Location is a group of equipment accommodated to the Telephony Server, which is divided by network address
unit. This is a basic unit for performing LAN management (ToS control, Bandwidth control, VLAN). Each lo-
cation requires an unique ID, which is called Location ID (LOC-ID).
