UNDERBODY NOISE
Some 1987 Wrangler models equipped with a 231 transfer case may experience an underbody
bumping noise while operating the vehicle on rough roads. This condition may be caused by
insufficient clearance between the transfer case lower housing and the skid plate/rear crossmem-
ber. A new skid plate, PN 8983 100 055, is available to correct this condition.
NOTE: The 231 transfer case entered production with VIN 2BXXXXXXXHB518291.
Service correction involves checking the transfer case-to-skid plate clearance and replacing the
skid plate if necessary.
PROCEDURE
Clearance Check
1. Raise and support the vehicle.
2. Measure the clearance (A) between the rear
of transfer case and the skid plate as shown.
If the clearance is not at least 19 mm (3/4 in.)
check the transmission rear mount.
If the transmission rear cushion is in good con-
dition, replace the skid plate as described.
If the rear cushion is damaged replace it
and recheck transfer case to skid plate/rear
crossmember clearance. If clearance remains

insufficient, continue with skid plate/rear cross-
member replacement.
