AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION
DIAGNOSIS AND TESTING
should increase then drop to 0 psi after
downshift.
Slowly move the valve body throttle lever fully
forward then fully rearward. In the toward posi-
tion, pressure should be 372 to 414 kPa (54 to
60 psi) and 621 to 662 kPa (90 to 96 psi) as the
lever is moved rearward.
Test Two
This test checks pump output, pressure regula-
tion, and front clutch/rear servo condition by
comparing operating pressures at the rear ser-
vo and accumulator pressure ports in ranges 1
and 2.
Turn the test gauge selector to line pressure
position.
Move the gearshift lever to 1 range and operate
the engine at 1000 rpm.
Slowly move the valve body throttle lever fully
forward then fully rearward. In the forward posi-
tion, pressure should be 372 to 414 kPa (54 to
60 psi) and gradually increase to 621 to 662 kPa
(90 to 96 psi) as the lever is moved rearward.
Turn the test gauge selector handle to the rear
servo apply position.
Operate the engine at 1000 rpm.
Slowly move the valve body throttle lever fully
forward then fully rearward. Compare servo
pressure with line pressure at the accumulator
port. Servo pressure should not vary from line
pressure by more than 21 kPa (3 psi).
Turn the test gauge selector to line pressure
position.
Place the gearshift lever in 2 range and operate
the engine at 1000 rpm.
Test Three
This test checks pump output, pressure regula-
tion and the front clutch/rear servo condition by
measuring and comparing operating pressure
at the rear servo pressure port in Reverse.
NOTE: For this test, only the high pressure
gauge is used. The gauge hose is connected
directly to the rear servo. It is not necessary to
move the gauge selector to any specific
position.
Operate the engine at curb idle speed.
Move the gearshift lever to Reverse and note
the gauge reading. Pressure should be approxi-
mately 1 103 kPa (160 psi) at idle.
Slowly increase engine speed to 1600 rpm and
note the high pressure gauge reading again.
Pressure should increase to approximately 1
862 kPa (270 psi) as engine speed is increased.
Operate the engine at idle speed. Move the
gearshift lever from Reverse to Drive and note
the high pressure gauge reading. Pressure
should drop to 0 psi when the lever is moved to
Drive. This test checks for leakage into the rear
servo which can cause rear band burnout.
Test Four
This test checks governor operation. It mea-
sures governor pressure response to changes
