TRAC-LOK DIFFERENTIAL OVERHAUL
Mount gauge block clamp J 5223-14 and hold-
ing screw J 5223-24 on the axle housing. S e -
cure the clamp to the housing with an axle cov-
er bolt. Position the holding screw over the
gauge block.
Extend holding screw J 5223-24 until it is firmly
seated against the gauge block and holds the
block in position.
Loosen the gauge block thumbscrew and allow
the spring loaded plunger to contact gauge ar-
bor J 5223-4.
Tighten the gauge block thumbscrew securely.
Then loosen the holding screw and remove the
gauge block.
Measure the distance between the anvil (A) and
plunger (B) of gauge block J 5223-4 with a mi-
crometer. Record this dimension for final shim
selection. It represents the initial pinion depth.

Remove the differential bearing caps and gauge
tools from the axle housing.
Remove the pinion nut, yoke, front bearing and
pinion gear from the axle housing. Discard the
old pinion nut.
Remove the pinion rear bearing cup and the
pinion depth starter shim.
Select the required pinion depth shim as
follows:
• Subtract pinion variance from standard set-
ting. This equals desired depth.
• Add starter shim thickness to existing depth.
This equals total depth.
Subtract desired depth from total depth. This
equals required shim thickness.
NOTE: Refer to the Depth Shim Computation
Chart for examples of the computation and se-
lection procedure.
