Pry the differential case to one side and zero
dial indicator J 8001.
Pry the differential case to the opposite side
and record the dial indicator reading. The indi-
cator reading is the additional shim thickness
needed for zero end play.
NOTE: For example, if the reading was 0.20 mm
(0.008 in), an additional 0.10 mm (0.004 in) shim
will be required at each side of the differential.
Assemble the necessary zero end play shims
and set them aside for final installation. Tag the
shims for reference.
Remove the differential case and dial indicator
set and proceed to Differential Case Assembly.
Differential Case Assembly
Assemble the side gears (1) and thrust washers
(2) and install them in the case.
NOTE: Be sure to replace the side gear thrust
washers if clearance measured at disassembly
exceeded 0.18 mm (0.007 in).
Install the differential pinions (3) and thrust
washers (4) in the case. Be sure to align the
pinions with the shaft bores in the case.
Recheck side gear clearance. If clearance ex-
ceeds 0.18 mm (0.007 in), replace the side
gears.
Install the differential pinion shaft (22) and the
lockpin (21) in the case.
Remove the differential bearings with remover J
22912-01 and a press.
Install the zero end play shims on each side
side of the case.
Reinstall the differential bearings with tools J
8092 and J 21784.
Position and align the ring gear (10) on the dif-
ferential case (9).
Install replacement ring gear bolts. Tighten the
bolts alternately and evenly to 70 N»m (52 ft-lbs]
torque.
Proceed to Ring Gear Backlash Adjustment.
Ring Gear Backlash Adjustment
NOTE: Ring gear backlash establishes the run-
ning clearance between the ring and pinior
gears. Adjustment involves moving the rinc
gear toward or away from the pinion. Adjust
ment is controlled by the differential bearinc
end play shims.
