STEERING AND FRONT AXLE
FRONT AXLE SHIFT MOTOR
Disconnect the vacuum pump from port (B) and
connect the pump to port (C).
Block off the shift motor-to-transfer case port (D)
with a rubber vacuum cap.
Apply 51 kPa (15 in. Hg.) to the motor through
port (C). Replace the motor if it will not hold
vacuum for a minimum of 30 seconds.
Maintain vacuum to port (C).
Remove the rubber cap blocking off port (D) and
check for vacuum at port (D). If vacuum is
present, the motor is OK. If vacuum is not
present, proceed to next step.
Maintain vacuum to port (C). Rotate the right
front wheel as necessary to be sure the axle has
shifted into four-wheel drive.
NOTE: The axle must be completely engaged in
four-wheel drive mode in order to open port (C)
to vacuum.
Check for vacuum at port (D) again. If vacuum is
now present at port (D), the shift motor is OK. If
vacuum is still not present at port (D), replace
the shift motor.
SHIFT MOTOR AND HOUSING REMOVAL
Raise and support the vehicle. Position a drain
pan under the shift motor housing (A).
Disconnect the vacuum harness from the motor.
Remove the housing attaching bolts and
remove the housing (A) and motor (B).

Mark the shift fork and housing for assembly
reference.
Rotate the shift motor and remove the shift fork
and motor snap rings.
Remove the shift motor (2) from the housing
and remove the O-ring (1) from the motor (2).
Discard the O-ring.
