STANDARD DIFFERENTIAL OVERHAUL

Clean the bearing cup bores in the axle
housing.
Install the starter shim in the rear bearing cup
bore of the axle housing.
NOTE: If the shim is chamfered on one side,
position the chamfered side so it faces the bot-
tom of the bearing cup bore.
Install the pinion rear bearing cup (13) in the
axle housing and on top of the starter shim.
Use tools J 8092 and J 8608 to seat the cup in
the bore.
Install the pinion front bearing cup (16) in the
axle housing with tools J 8092 and J 8611-01.
Install the rear bearing (12) on the pinion gear
( 1 1 ) .
Install the pinion gear (11) in the axle housing.
Install the front bearing (17) on the pinion gear.
Seat the bearing on the gear and in the cup (16).
Install the pinion yoke (19) and the original pi-
nion nut (20) on the pinion gear. Tighten the
pinion nut only enough to remove end play.
NOTE: Do not install the pinion seal or preload
spacer at this time.
Determine desired pinion depth as follows:
G Record depth variance marked on the pinion
gear.
If the variance is a plus figure, add the vari-
ance to the standard setting of 2.095 inches
(53.21 mm). If the variance is a minus figure,
subtract it from the standard setting.
# Record the desired depth figure for final
shim selection.
Measure initial pinion depth as follows.
Assemble gauge arbor J 5223-4 and discs J
6381-2. Then seat the discs in the axle housing
differential bearing saddles.
Install the differential bearing caps over the
discs and tighten the bearing cap bolts
securely.
Place gauge block J 5223-20 on the raised rear
face of the pinion gear. Position the spring
loaded plunger in the block under the center of
gauge arbor shaft J 5223-4.
NOTE: Do not allow the gauge block anvil to
contact the pinion gear teeth.
