POWER STEERING GEAR
Install the ball bearings (28) in the rack piston (3)
as follows:
• Assemble 9 silver and 9 black ball bearings.
• Alternately install one black ball bearing
followed by one silver ball bearing until all 18
bearings have been installed through the
return guide hole (F) nearest the rack piston
ring.

• After installing each ball bearing, press it
downward to provide room for the next ball
bearing.
NOTE: To ease bearing installation, rotate the
wormshaft while feeding bearings into the rack
piston circuit. However, do not let the wormshaft
back out of the piston.
• Fill one ball return guide half (4) with
petroleum jelly.
• Install the six remaining ball bearings in the
guide half (4) filled with petroleum jelly. Be
sure to alternate the silver and black bearings
in the same sequence used to fill the rack
piston.

• Install the remaining ball guide half and insert
the assembled guides into the guide return
holes in the rack piston (3).
CAUTION: Verify that the ball bearings in the
guide and rack piston are installed alternately
(black bearing followed by silver bearing) before
proceeding.
Install the ball return guide clamp and screws
(5). Tighten the screws to 14 N-m (10 ft-lbs)
torque.
Insert arbor tool J 21552 into the wormshaft and
position the assembled rack piston and tool on
end. Support the assembly on two wood blocks
(G) until ready for installation.
