ASSEMBLY
Swing the weighted arm (A) of the Hydraulic
V a l v e T a p p e t T e s t e r T o o l J - 5 7 9 0 ( B ) , or
equivalent, away from the ram of the tester.
Place a 7.925 - 7.950 mm (0.312 - 0.313 in.)
diameter ball bearing on the plunger c a p of the
tappet.
Lift the ram (C) and position the tappet (with the
ball bearing) inside the tester cup (D).
Lower the ram, then adjust the n o s e of the ram
until it contacts the ball bearing. Do not tighten
the hex nut on the ram.
Fill the tester cup with Hydraulic Valve Tappet
Test Oil J - 5 2 6 8 , or equivalent, until the tappet is
completely submerged.
Swing the weighted arm onto the p u s h rod ( E ) .
P u m p t h e t a p p e t plunger up a n d d o w n to
remove air.
When the air bubbles c e a s e , swing the weighted
arm a w a y and allow the plunger to rise to the
normal position.
Adjust the n o s e of the ram to align the pointer (F)
with the S E T mark on the s c a l e of the tester and
tighten the hex nut.
Slowly swing the weighted arm onto the push
rod.
Rotate the cup by turning the handle ( G ) at the
b a s e of the tester clockwise one revolution
every two s e c o n d s .
O b s e r v e the leak-down time interval from the
instant the pointer aligns with the S T A R T mark
on the s c a l e until the pointer aligns with the
0.125 mark.
A normally functioning tappet will require 20 -
110 s e c o n d s to leak-down. Discard the tappets
with leak-down time intervals which a r e not
within this specification.

tappet (B) in the original bore.
