STEERING COLUMN INSTALLATION AND
ALIGNMENT
C A U T I O N : Be sure to preserve the energy
absorbing features of the steeering column. Use
only the specified screws, bolts and nuts and
tighten them to specified torque during
reassembly. Incorrect size or length fasteners
can prevent the column from compressing
under impact. The bolts and nuts that attach the
column mounting bracket to the column and
instrument panel must be tightened to the
correct torque to maintain the breakaway
capability of the bracket.
Position the column in the vehicle.
Align the intermediate shaft U-joint (2) and
steering shaft (1) and slide the U-joint onto the
shaft.
Install and tighten the U-joint pinch bolt (3) to 45
N-m (33 ft-lbs) torque.
Install the mounting bracket (B) on the steering
column. Tighten the bracket-to-column bolts to
28 N-m (21 ft-lbs) torque.
Install the upper and lower toe plates (4) on the
column. Do not tighten the toe plate bolts at this
time.
Position the toe plates on the floorpan and install
the toe plate-to-floorpan bolts. Do not tighten the
bolts at this time.
Position the column mounting bracket (B) on the
instrument panel and install the bracket
attaching bolts (A) finger tight.
Pull up on the column and tighten the mounting
bracket bolts (A) to 28 N-m (21 ft-lbs) torque.
Tighten all of the toe plate attaching bolts to 14
N-m (10 ft-lbs) torque.
Install the trim cover on the speedometer-
tachometer assembly.
Connect all of the column wire harnesses.
Remove the protective tape from painted areas
of the column.
Install the steering wheel.
On models with automatic transmission, check
and adjust the gearshift linkage if necessary.
Connect the battery negative cable.
STANDARD STEERING COLUMN DISASSEMBLY
NOTE:
S t e e r i n g column removal is not
necessary if only the lockplate, steering shaft
snap ring, canceling cam, upper bearing,
ignition lock cylinder, housing and shroud, or
any of the column switches are to be serviced.
Column removal is only necessary if the column
jacket, shift tube, or lower bearing must be
serviced.
Disconnect the battery negative cable.
Remove the steering wheel.
