Coolant Temperature Sensor (CTS) 1S8S 1.7L
T h e c o o l a n t t e m p e r a t u r e s e n s o r ( C T S ) is
located in the intake manifold coolant jacket.
T h e C T S p r o v i d e s a n e n g i n e c o o l a n t
temperature input to the E C U which will c a u s e
the E C U to:
• enrich the air/fuel mixture delivered by the
injector when the engine coolant is cold
• c o m p e n s a t e for fuel c o n d e n s a t i o n in the
intake manifold
• control engine warm-up idle speed
• i n c r e a s e the ignition a d v a n c e w h e n the
coolant is cold
• inhibit the E G R system when the coolant is
cold

Manifold Air/Fuel Temperature (MAT) Sensor
1985 1.7L
The manifold air/fuel temperature (MAT) s e n s o r
is located in the intake manifold.
This sensor reacts to the temperature of the
air/fuel mixture in the intake manifold a n d
provides an input to the E C U .
The E C U c o m p e n s a t e s for air density c h a n g e s
during high temperature operation.

A new d e s i g n intake manifold temperature
s e n s o r is used with the 1986-1987 Alliance/
Encore 1.4L engine TBI system. T h e s e n s o r (A)
does not come into contact with engine coolant.
Instead, it m e a s u r e s temperature of the intake
manifold outer surface.
