PISTON RING FITTING
N O T E : T h e two compression rings are made of
cast iron. T h e oil control ring is a three-piece
steel design.
Carefully c l e a n the carbon from all ring grooves.
T h e oil drain openings in the oil ring grooves and
pin b o s s must be clear.
C A U T I O N : Do not r e m o v e m e t a l from the
grooves or lands. T h i s will c h a n g e the ring-to-
groove c l e a r a n c e s a n d will d a m a g e the ring-to-
land seating.
Measure the ring s i d e c l e a r a n c e with a feeler
gauge (A) fitted snugly between the ring land
and ring.
Rotate the ring in the groove. It must move freely
around the circumference of the groove.

P l a c e the ring in the cylinder bore a n d push
down with the inverted piston to position near
the lower e n d of the ring travel.
M e a s u r e the ring gap with a feeler g a u g e (A)
fitting snugly between the ring ends.
