PROPELLER SHAFT
Refer to the Propeller Shaft Runout chart in the
Specifications section.
Replace the shaft if runout exceeds specified
tolerance at the front, center or rear of the
shaft.
UNIVERSAL JOINT ANGLE MEASUREMENT
Shift the transmission and transfer case into
Neutral.
Raise the vehicle on a twin post or similar type-
hoist that will support the rear axle and allow
the rear wheels to be rotated.
Measure the angles at the axle pinion yoke (A)
as follows:
• Rotate the propeller shaft until one of the
pinion yoke bearing c a p s is facing
downward.
• Place the magnetic base of inclinometer tool
J 23498 on the pinion yoke bearing cap. Re-
cord the reading and remove the tool.
j Rotate the propeller shaft until one of the
propeller shaft yoke bearing caps is facing
downward.
Place the inclinometer tool on the shaft yoke
bearing cap. Record the reading and remove
the tool.
NOTE:
The inclinometer frame must face the
same direction for both readings.

Measure the angles at the front slip yoke (B) as
follows:
# Rotate the propeller shaft until one of the slip
yoke bearing caps is facing downward.
# Place the inclinometer tool on the bearing
cap. Record the reading and remove the tool.
# Rotate the propeller shaft until one of the
shaft yoke bearing caps is facing downward.
# Place the inclinmeter tool on the shaft yoke
bearing cap. Record the reading and remove
the tool.
# The difference between the two readings is
the front universal joint angle.
Compare the angle measurements taken at the
front and rear. The difference between the two
readings is the overall universal joint angle.
