Cleaning and Inspection
Clean the steering gear components with
solvent and dry them with shop towels or
compressed air.
Inspect the housing for cracks, porosity,
damaged threads or gasket surface scoring or
distortion.
Inspect the pitman shaft bore contact surface
and the sector teeth for wear, pitting, or other
damage.
Insert the pitman shaft in the housing bore and
check for shaft or housing bore wear. The shaft
should be a smooth, bind free fit and not display
any visible side play when installed in the bore.
If the shaft appears loose but is not visibly worn,
trial fit a replacement shaft in the housing bore. If
the replacement shaft is also loose, replace the
housing. However, if the replacement shaft fits
properly, discard the original pitman shaft.
Inspect the wormshaft bearings and races for
wear, flat spots, pitting, cracks, or other
damage. If either the bearing or race is
damaged, both parts must be replaced.
If the upper race is loose in the housing, trial fit a
replacement race. If the replacement race is
a l s o l o o s e , r e p l a c e the h o u s i n g . If the
replacement race fits properly, do not replace
the housing.

CAUTION: The ball nut teeth are machined to a
greater width and depth on one side (A). When
assembling the wormshaft and ball nut, position
the ball nut so these teeth (A) will face the
housing side cover after installation.
Install one bearing (13) in each ball guide hole in
the ball nut. Move the wormshaft up and down
and side-to-side until the bearings roll down
the ball nut threads and under the wormshaft to
support it.
Install the ball guides (15) in the ball nut (12).
