REAR AXLE
GENERAL SERVICE PROCEDURES
Remove the axle shaft (1) with slide hammer J
2619-01 and puller J 21579.

Lubricate the axle bearing (5) with J E E P wheel
bearing lubricant or an equivalent EP-rated
bearing lubricant.
Install the axle shaft.
Position the brake support plate, seal retainer
(3) and guide plate (2) on the axle flange studs
and install the attaching nuts.
Tighten the guide plate/support plate attaching
nuts evenly and in a cross pattern, to 43 Nhm
(32 ft-lbs) torque.
Install the brake drum and wheel. Tighten the
wheel nuts to 102 N*m (75 ft-lbs) torque.
Lower the vehicle.
AXLE SHAFT BEARING AND RETAINER
Bearing and Retainer Replacement
Remove the axle shaft (1).
Mount the axle shaft in a vise.
Drill a 6 mm (1 /4 in) diameter hole in the bearing
retaining ring (6). Drill approximately three
quarters of the way through the ring.
Cut the ring (6) with a chisel and remove it from
the shaft.
Axle Shaft installation
Clean the bearing bore in the axle flange (8).
Apply a thin coat of bearing lubricant to the
bore after cleaning.
