STEERING AND FRONT AXLE
MANUAL STEERING GEAR
Remove the wormshaft upper bearing (10).
If the wormshaft upper bearing race (9) is to be
replaced, remove it from the housing (8) with a
hammer and brass punch (E).

Remove the wormshaft lower bearing retainer
(16) from the worm bearing adjuster (19). Use a
screwdriver (C) to pry the retainer out of the
adjuster.

Remove the wormshaft lower bearing (17) from
the bearing race (in the adjuster).
Examine the lower bearing race (18). If the race
is worn or damaged, remove it from the adjuster
as follows:
• Install the original adjuster locknut (20) on the
adjuster (19).
• Position the adjuster in a vise and clamp the
vise jaws on the adjuster locknut.
• Remove the race with slide hammer J 2619-01
and puller J 5822.

• Remove the adjuster from the vise and
remove the locknut from the adjuster. Discard
the locknut if bent or damaged.
