IN VEHICLE SERVICE AND ADJUSTMENT
Install the bolts (G) that attach the governor
body and park gear to the rear support. Finger-
tighten the bolts only.
Install E-clip (10) on the governor valve shaft
(3).
Slide the governor valve shaft (3) through the
weights (7-8), body (4) and output shaft (A).
Tighten the bolts (G) that attach the governor
body and park gear to the rear support to 11
N # m (100 in-lbs) torque.
Install the governor valve (2) on the shaft (3).
Secure the valve to the shaft with E-clip (1). Be
sure the valve moves freely on the shaft and in
the body.
Install the transmission adapter housing. Tight-
en the housing bolts to 32 N ^m (24 ft-lbs)
torque.
Install the transfer case and rear crossmember.
Connect the speedometer cable.
Connect the propeller shafts. Align the assem-
bly reference marks and tighten the U-joint
clamp bolts to 19 fskn (14 ft-lbs) torque.
Adjust the gearshift and throttle linkage.
Lower the vehicle.
Fill the transmission with J E E P automatic trans-
mission fluid or an equivalent D e x r o n ® II fluid.
PARK LOCK COMPONENT SERVICE
Park Lock Component Removal
Remove the transfer case and transmission
adapter housing.
Slide the sprag shaft (1) out of the adapter
housing and remove the sprag (2) and spring
(3).
Remove the snap ring (4) and slide the sprag
plug (5) out of the adapter housing. Remove the
plug pin also if so equipped.
Inspect the lock ball on the park lock rod (6).
Replace the rod if the ball is worn or damaged.
Refer to the valve body removal/installation
procedures in this section if the rod must be
replaced.

Clean and inspect the park lock components
and the park gear. Replace any component that
is worn or damaged.
