STEERING AND FRONT AXLE
STEERING COLUMN SERVICE
Place the turn signal switch in the neutral
position and install the hazard warning switch
knob.
Install the horn button components (A) in the
canceling cam.
Position the lockplate (3) on the steering shaft.
Install a replacement steering shaft snap ring (2)
on the sleeve of compressor tool J 23653-A and
mount the tool on the steering shaft.

Compress the lockplate and install the snap ring
(2) in the steering shaft groove.
Remove the compressor tool. Be sure the snap
ring (2) is fully seated before removing the tool.
Install the lockplate cover (1).
Install the steering column if removed.
Install the steering wheel. Tighten the steering
wheel nut to 34 N-m (25 ft-lbs) torque.
Adjust the ignition and dimmer switches a s
follows:
• Turn the ignition key to the On position.
• Loosen the switch mounting screws.
• Move the ignition switch downward to
eliminate lash and tighten the switch screws
only enough to hold the switch in position.
• Compress the dimmer switch slightly and
insert a 3/32 inch diameter drill into switch
hole (A). The drill will prevent any horizontal
movement of the switch.
• Move the switch toward the steering wheel to
remove actuator rod lash.
• Tighten the switch attaching screws to 4 N-m
(35 in-lbs) torque.
• Check operation of both switches. Readjust
either switch if necessary.
Install the switch h a r n e s s protectors (if
equipped) and snap the protectors into place on
the column.
TILT STEERING COLUMN DISASSEMBLY
N O T E : S t e e r i n g column removal is not
necessary if only the lockplate, steering shaft
snap ring, canceling cam, upper bearing,
ignition lock cylinder, tilt mechanism, housing or
any of the column switches are to be serviced.
Column removal is only necessary if the column
jacket, shift tube, or lower bearing must be
serviced.
